Brief historical overview.
Guardia Lombardi has ancient origins. The place was known from the ancient Rome because it was adjoining the Via Appia, that was built by the consul Appio Claudio and connected Rome to Brindisi. The construction of the town dates back to 590 when the Langobards named it Guardiae Longobardorum because it was the most Northern place of their territories that went down to the South. It was the look-out point from where they controlled and defended their territories from the advance of the Arabs.
From 1076, during the next centuries and till the unification of Italy, it was conquered by the Normans, Swabians, Spanish and Bourbons. It has mantained its Medieval structure.
The town is about 50 km from Avellino, 100 km from Naples and Pompei. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the motorway Rome-Naples-Bari.
